Opening up with v-ball's Corby

The Vitals
Name: Ryan Corby
Sport: Varsity Volleyball
Age: 22
Field of Study: Architecture

Favourite thing about being on the team?
Probably the competition, teammates, brotherhood and friendship.

Least favourite thing about being on the team?
Time commitment. Practices alone take up 10-15 hours a week. The tournaments last all day Fridays and Saturdays. Game day, depending on if it's away, lasts about 12 hours in a single day, and we play about seven-to-10 games within 15 days.

Most memorable moment?
Winning the Bronze Medal in 2005-2006. It was an accomplishment; as a team we worked together.

Future plans or goals?
I'll be done very shortly (Volleyball) because my career's starting to catch up. I have a job waiting for me in Calgary. I'm going to be working as an EllisDon Project Coordinator.

Toughest team to play. Why?
Mohawk. They are well coached. They have three out of the five top players in the whole province. We never beat them until a couple of weeks ago out of my entire four years of being on the team.

Easiest?
George Brown. Their program was not as developed as the rest of the province.

Things you look forward to?
Seeing this team develop and becoming one of the top teams. Also, watching the younger guys develop into star athletes.

How well do the teammates get along?
We have a very open relationship. This team doesn't have personal issues, if an issue comes up, usually it's just about Volleyball in general.

Favourite sports team?
Calgary Flames (Hockey)

How hard is it to balance school and the sport?
It is extremely tough. You have to juggle, just like a full time job. Athletes deserve a lot of credit for being able to do that.

Other hobbies?
Curling, I enjoy golf, other than that work, school and volleyball. That's about it. If it is Volleyball season than I will spend five hours a month doing those other hobbies, and 20-30 hours a month if it is out of season.

How long have you been playing?
I have been playing College Volleyball for four years. I started playing when I was in grade seven, and 12 or 13 years old.

Special Talents?
Not really. Other than Volleyball and being athletic, I'm talented in my field of architecture.

One thing the team is lacking?
I think the team right now is lacking confidence. They are very skilled players and are one of the most talented teams in the province. They need to realize that and start playing like it.

Favourite thing about the head coach?
I've known him for a long time. I grew up watching him play Volleyball. I love how he is a friend, coach, and someone that you can always count on.
