Fanshawe got some action

Wednesday, November 5 was the National Day of Action. Students gathered all over to protest the raise in tuition fees. At Fanshawe, a rally was held in Forwell Hall where students could sign a petition to lower tuition fees and listen to guest speakers such as Irene Mathyssen (NDP Member of Parliament for London-Fanshawe), Khalil Ramal (Liberal MPP for London-Fanshawe), Cathie Auger (the Fanshawe College Vice President of Students Affairs) and Darius Mirshahi (Social Justice Club).

It was organized by the Fanshawe Social Justice Club, the Fanshawe New Democrats and the Fanshawe Student Union and I would like to thank everyone who attended and everyone who took the time to sign the petition.

I also spoke at the rally on Wednesday to explain the role the CSA has in advocating for college and college-university students on these matters. Please be aware that the CSA is a completely separate organization from the CFS, Canadian Federation of Students. The Fanshawe Student Union is not a member of the CFS.

The CSA has been advocating for increased investments and funding from both provincial and federal governments. In Ontario, universities receive the highest amount of funding; high schools receive the second highest amount, and then colleges. In Canada, Ontario receives the second lowest amount of per student funding, yet students in Ontario pay the second highest amount in tuition fees. Tuition fees in Ontario must be fair and they must be regulated.

If colleges had more funding, students would be able to pay less tuition. The tuition students pay today is the investment they make toward their futures, and we have to make sure that we are receiving all that we can for that investment. If we are heading toward a recession and are expecting to face a labor deficit we can not have reduced funding or unfair tuition hikes to our colleges and universities. We need more government funding both provincially and federally for our colleges and through capital grants to ensure that more Ontarians receive the education they require.

Ontario's current policy on tuition fees expires in 2009-10. The CSA will be advocating on our behalf to make sure that the tuition fee policy, per student funding, and student financial assistance will be fair and that those students who do not have the financial means to afford postsecondary education on their own have access to financial assistance.

If you have any questions about the CSA please feel free to ask me. If you have any questions for Irene Mathyssen or Khalil Ramal their websites are listed below.
