Fun and Fitness: Spend a night at the gym

Tuesdays and Sundays don't offer much in terms of excitement around London. Unless you're hitting a cheap Tuesday movie, or eating a “Toonie Tuesday” meal at KFC, you won't be left with many other options.

Sundays don't get much better — local strip joints aren't even open to pay a visit! However, I come bearing good news. The Fanshawe Residence Nights at J building will keep you out of trouble on these particular days.

Fanshawe Residence Nights offer an open gym experience for students looking to break out and play any sport of their choice. They run on Tuesdays and Sundays between 10 and 12 pm. Normally we arrange the sports based on demand of the students that come to participate each night.

For example, if there is a group of people that want to play volleyball, another group interested in basketball, and some others looking to play some hockey, than we will divvy up the three gymnasiums into the according sports.

This particular program has been running for several years now but it took some time for it to actually catch on with the students.

The last couple of years have seen an enthusiastic increase in numbers as word has got out about this athletics service.

Regular rules apply of course. You must be a Fanshawe student with a valid student card, and you must have proper gym attire as well as indoor shoes. Although the name of the game is “Residence Program,” you don't have to be living in residence. Being a Fanshawe student will suffice.

I highly encourage all students to come and check it out. Like I said, Tuesdays and Sundays don't offer much else and that is the very reason why we chose these particular days to run this program. Besides, with the cold weather underway, we're all going to be limited to indoor activity anyhow. It's important to take note that the odd Tuesday or Sunday may be cancelled due to other gym activities taking place.

Be sure to check the gymnasium schedules at the Fitness Centre in advance to ensure this isn't the case. So get your classmates rounded up, and see you next Tuesday!
