Men's basketball looking to rise to the top

The Fanshawe Men's basketball team has finally wrapped up their tryouts and has their team together that they will use in hopes of dominating through the regular season and playoffs and take them back to an OCAA championship.

Just two short years ago the team made a big run, winning the West Region Championship and amassing a 14-0 record, but ultimately fell in the semi-finals of the OCAA championships. Last year was a big of a disappointment for the team as they only finished third in the league.

Despite a bit of past disappointment, there are high hopes and big dreams going into this season and nothing but success will be accepted.

“We had a lot of guys come out this year to tryout, there was a lot to select from for the coach and we're really expecting some big things,” said Forward Jabari Cooper, who captured the rookie of the year honours in the OCAA in 2007.

Cooper also expects the team in general to excel at the guard position, which will really help the team breakout of their own zone and bring it up the court.

Getting back to top form won't be easy for the Falcons though, it's tough in a college program to keep the core of the team together with the turnover rates in college so high. With there consistently being so many new faces on the team Cooper feels he needs to show that he is the go to guy.

“I just feel I need to be a leader, on and off the court, and most importantly just lead by example and be the best player and person that I can be,” explained Cooper, who is looking to make an appearance on the West Region first team all stars again like he did in 2007. “Just through showing good hustle and being strong on the court. I'm not going to score a ton of points or get a bunch of rebounds every game, but just by doing all the little things to make your team better and help your team win.”

There is certainly no question about the focus of the entire team or Cooper heading into this season.

“Just win man, going all the way and winning the OCAA, It's all that matters,” he said.

The Fanshawe Falcons Men's Basketball team kicks off their season on October 15 at Redeemer College and will play their first home game on October 22 when they host St. Clair.
