With the 2008/2009 school year set to kick off, Fanshawe's elite are working diligently behind the scenes to assess the student body and its campus — in order to provide the best experience possible. From lavish outdoor renovations to essential computer upgrades, it is clear that our school is taking the “fresh start” phrase rather seriously.

That is until we dig a little bit deeper and find the real concern that is on the mind of every individual outside of our GPA achieving community.

You.

Yes, you — the reckless drunkard only at school to party, hell bent on bringing fire and chaos to the great city of London.

What's that?

I've got you figured out wrong?

But how can that be? It says so right here in the London Free Press that Police have specifically designed tactics to control the noise and student related problems surrounding Fanshawe.

Still doesn't ring a bell?

Surely you remember last year's outbursts of drunken violence towards police officers and each other; the riotous and uncontrollable swarms of students emptying into the streets, while harassing and vandalizing the community that shares its side streets with your obnoxious behavior.

Huh? You weren't there? Well, neither was I. I just assumed that…

Blah, Blah, Blah, you can see what I'm getting at here. Thanks to a couple of bad apples Fanshawe's entire student body has been painted with the dunce brush and our surrounding community is starting to take notice. Right now, fingers are flying like tickled sausages across keyboards and phones alike, in search of a solution to the growing trend of college excess.

It's horribly unfair and embarrassing that it has come to this. Forget the hard work you've put into your studies, last fall employers were calling and emailing the school voicing their concerns about the “credibility of the college and whether or not [they] want to hire its students,” said Emily Marcoccia, Fanshawe's Manager of Marketing and Communications. In a world where first impressions are crucial towards building a career, how much longer will we let the ignorance of some affect the rest of us?

Already, a police blitz is planned for September in what is understood to be an inevitable explosion of student aggression. Already painted as criminals before even setting foot into a classroom.

Rather than scaring the entire college into abstinence, wouldn't it make more sense to focus on bringing back attention to our school for everything we do so well?

We have always had a reputation of excellence and innovation, students who eventually grow to be respected leaders in our fields of study upon graduation. We are talking about a very small (less than 1 per cent) amount of Fanshawe's 15,000 plus student body directly involved in these isolated events.

Are we really at the point where we need to be told how to live our lives? Are we really that intolerable? I apologize that I'm even writing this, but I want you to have the heads up before the rush of preaching begins. I can understand the concern, but the only people that can solve these issues are the students themselves.

First year's you have the opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong. You are not a bunch of immature delinquents, but valuable members of our society. Returning students, we must continue to act as role models for our community — the world is watching now.

Bottom line, we need to take the power back, because nobody will do it for us.
