Ladies bring sex to this city

Sex And The City (2008)

The Sex And The City movie arrived with a bang at the Westmount Six theatre along with every woman in a five kilometer radius primped and polished from head-to-toe, and inappropriate everywhere in between.

The theatre was packed, and not just with your typical Friday night crowd. From front to back, every row was filled with women of all ages — mothers, daughters, grandmothers — with the possible exception of two or three unwilling men looking for brownie points.

It seemed there were more seats filled waiting to see Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) than Indiana Jones.

The lights went dim, the giggles subsided and the heels ceased to be heard. From the start, Sex And The City felt like it had never left home on HBO.

The four New York women were all stronger, wiser and a little older than the last time we saw them roaming the streets of the big city, yet none of them had really changed at all.

Carrie has landed her ‘Big' fish, played by Chris Noth. Yet all these years later, she is still struggling to reel him in and get him down the aisle.

A bronzed and committed Samantha is living in L.A. with boyfriend of five years, Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) — a record in the relationship department for the big city publicist.

Charlotte is content with her family of husband Harry (Evan Handler) and adopted Asian daughter, and only gets happier in her own quirky way.

And Miranda is struggling to find balance between her career as a lawyer and her sex life with husband Steve (David Eigenberg).

The movie did not venture far from the trendy and witty vibe of the show, with the exception of some seriously intense moments, like Carrie's meltdown in the middle of the street in front of the New York City Library. However, the reality checks were seamlessly intertwined with humour and true friendship.

Tongue-and-cheek humour is laced throughout the entire film as the four best friends learn that sex in the city does not get any easier or less complicated when you are in your forties.

You can expect to see a lot of soul searching, growing up, and of course — sex!

So whether you are jonesing for a Samantha fix, or you are dying to see how the Carrie and Big saga will end, the Sex And The City movie is a worthwhile film and a great excuse to get sexy for the movies.
