Research studies have shown that exposure to scented products can cause harm to many people. Within our own College Community, there are a number of Fanshawe students and staff that are sensitive to scented products and it can often result in a variety of health-related issues.

Scents are included in a large range of products including: shampoos, hairsprays, deodorants, colognes and aftershaves, fragrances and perfumes, lotions and creams and industrial and household chemicals.

Scented products can be blamed for some, or all of the following symptoms:
- headaches
- dizziness
- nausea
- fatigue
- upper respiratory symptoms
- shortness of breath
- skin irritation
- anxiety

Allergic and asthmatic patients report that certain odours can trigger an attack.

In response to this health risk, Fanshawe College is continuing their marketing campaign to increase awareness about the health effects associated with scented products. Look for our posters throughout the campus!

Reconsider the use of personal care products that are scented while studying, working or enjoying College facilities. Be considerate and refrain from using scented products. If you have questions about scent sensitivities, please drop by the Health and Safety Services in Room D1021 or call 519-452-4424.
