Fanshawe goes ‘Green' for St. Patty's, or does it?

Like a leprechaun stealing gold in the night, one Fanshawe College student lounge suddenly went green in what some think is a tribute to the upcoming Irish holiday.

“Wow! Now that is green,” said first-year landscape design student Emerald Flannigan, who was walking by the first-floor D lounge. “Does that mean I can come here and drink green beer on Monday?”

According to Fanshawe staff, the painting was rolled out late Wednesday so that it would come as a surprise to students as they filed into their classrooms early Thursday morning.

The new vibrant-green lounge, which is usually packed with studying students, was virtually empty come Thursday, except for student Jon Spartan who, for the record, is colour blind.

“My friends were here for a couple minutes, but I guess the bright green gave them all headaches and they moved to D Junction,” said Spartan. “It doesn't bother me much. I like having the place to myself.”

When asked about the new colour for the lounge, Fanshawe staff had a different explanation, rather than the popular St. Patty's green theory.

“St. Patrick's Day is not a recognized holiday by the college, we would never paint with that intention in mind,” explained Fanshawe staffer Guy Lemeau. “The new design is part of our new ‘green' plan to make the college more environmentally sound.”

Rather than adding more recycling boxes or replacing energy inefficient windows, Lemeau said the college has opted for just painting everything bright green in hopes to distract from real campus environmental problems.

“We recommend that students don't actually touch the green walls,” advised Lemeau. “It's a combination of excess lead paint from China and the primer was oil-based, which we just dumped down the drain after we were done.”

Lemeau added that the oil/lead combination was the only way they could get such a vibrantly offensive shade of green.
