Mandatory helmets coming to campus?

Fanshawe College's Health and Safety Committee is recommending that all staff and students wear safety helmets while on campus. The recommendation comes after an exhaustive two-year study on head injuries on campus.

“We are very concerned for the welfare of staff and students on campus, and with the dramatic rise in head injuries on campus during the time of this study, this was a natural course of action,” said Oliver Manikin, a member of the Health and Safety Committee. “The campus is full of hazards, including brick walls, sharp corners, slippery tiled floors, and in some areas carpets that people could stumble over and crash to the floor.”

The two-year study titled, “We're Sub-Normal”, revealed from January 2005 until December 2007 that a total of one head trauma incidents happened on campus, a 1,000 per cent increase over the previous 38 years of the campuses existence.

“The documentation from the head trauma incident does not reveal that inebriation may have been a contributing factor in the injury suffered by this individual,” said Manikin when asked if alcohol was a factor. “What we do know is that the person lived in residence, visited a campus bar, was rowdy and challenged several individuals to fight in a short period of time. From the security report the individual was found in an isolated part of campus with his body crumpled to the floor and his head leaning on the wall, lacerated.”

The committee's list of recommendations includes that staff and students must, upon entering any campus building, doff a Health and Safety Committee approved helmet/head gear that must also be CSA approved. The committee is also strongly suggesting that all brick walls be retrofitted with padding, and that all sharp corners be sanded/filed down to be rounded and also padded.

Students asked about the recommendations offered up mixed messages.

“That's one of the stupidest things I have ever heard,” said Bill Cyrus. “Is it time to grow back the mullet? Should we remove all microwaves as well?”

“If this actually happens at least I won't feel the pressure to do my hair every morning,” said Sandy Brown. “That's a few extra z's for me. Hopefully they'll have jockey helmets, I like those.”

The committee is asking for feedback leading up to their presentation to Fanshawe's Board of Governors meeting Thursday February 28, and are asking students to log on to the following website to provide comments: www.getyoursafetyon.org.

If BOG approves the recommendations, safety helmets on campus will go into effect for Fall Term 2008, and all helmets will have to be purchased at the College Bookstore.
