Around the Ring: WWE bungled build to Rumble

They were on a good streak for a while, but WWE really dropped the ball over the past week and a half. I'm not saying that I'm not excited for the Royal Rumble (which has now aired by the time most of you are reading this), but WWE's jump from standard broadcasting to HD really consumed Raw. You could see the cameras focus up close at the wrestler's faces more than usual. Did anyone even notice that the colours were a red hue?

The new set was pretty cool. I can see that changing to the new set allows WWE to perhaps save time and money using the same set for all the brands. It's going to take a while to get used to seeing the huge screen slightly off centre. WWE went all out with the lighting and video capabilities of this new set and knew exactly that HD fans would expect a spectacular video show.

Onto the actual substance of Raw, well, there really wasn't any. The bulk of the show consisted of interviews, backstage vignettes and a dozen recaps of the past two weeks (especially pertaining to Hardy and Orton). Usually the Smackdown and Raw programs before a PPV are mainly used to hype up the show but this was probably the worst pre-PPV week I can remember. It's bad enough they're going to show the same recaps all through the Rumble.

Before I move on to some TNA action (that sounds kind of naughty), here are some quick picks for the Rumble for those of you who read the Interrobang online on Friday and the weekend.

Y2J and JBL will probably go to some kind of DQ (although I would LOVE to see Y2J slap JBL senseless), Flair will beat MVP, Edge will beat Mysterio, and I'm going out on a limb here and say that the WWE would be insane if they didn't put the strap on Hardy. Mind you, I can see Orton perhaps losing it next month in the predicted Elimination Chamber match. Geez...maybe Hardy can win it at the Rumble, Orton wins it back next month and sets up their match at Wrestlemania. Which leaves the winner of the Rumble to face Edge.

Speaking of the Rumble, there are a couple candidates to win. I don't want HHH to win or HBK because I don't need to see them in a title run again. Umaga is powerful enough to win but I think WWE is going to have a face winning the Rumble. That leaves Mark Henry, Khali and Big Daddy V out of the picture...plus, the big large men who would probably win a match like this never do. That leaves ‘Taker, left, or the returning Lashley as my two predictions to win the match. Maybe we'll see The Big Show.

Quickly looking at TNA, their show was decent but B.G. James selecting has dad as his tag partner? DUMB! Samoa Joe getting thrown out of the number one contender match and being guided/calmed down by Nash? STUPID! I thought these two were at each other's throats! Did I miss something? Let's not forget the “BIG SECRET” that James Mitchel dropped last week: HE IS ABYSS' father. BORING!!!! This is the thing that Abyss wanted no one to know? Big deal. Many people hate their fathers and vice versa.

Christian winning the number one contender match should set up another quality match with Kurt Angle. I'll say the same about watching Awesome Kong and ODB when they go at it.

That's all for this week! Hope you enjoy (or enjoyed) the Rumble. Send in your thoughts on the show!
