Voting hits record high at student elections

Fanshawe students were practically banging down the door of the FSU Office October 5 in an effort to get in a last-minute vote for their favourite Student Administrative Council (SAC) representative.

The voting was done over two whole days, but voter turnout was so great that even after 16 hours the lines were still without an end.

“We don't have the final numbers in yet, but we're pretty sure that nearly every student at Fanshawe came out to vote for these elections,” said Barry Morgan, an FSU official vote counter.

“I've been doing this for over 10 years, and I've seen some good turnouts,” added another FSU council rep who didn't want to be named, “but this is unreal.”

There was a record turnout of candidates this year as well. Each department had at least three students running for the chance to represent their faculty on SAC; some areas had as many as eight people running.

“It's just too bad that we all can't win,” said one of the candidates running in the Graphic Arts division. “It would be so great to have the students so thoroughly represented on the council.”

The students seem impressed with the high level of polite, yet aggressive campaigning that was seen throughout the college in the weeks leading up to the election. There were over 30,000 posters, flyers, buttons and bumper stickers handed out amongst the candidates. Many even went the extra mile and spent much of their own money to take groups of students to the Out Back Shack for a beer or some wings to garner more support.

“SAC is going to be a vicious place this year, with so many politically charged, qualified individuals earning the votes,” Morgan added. “I'm looking forward to sitting in on the meetings and hearing the winners debate important issues in the name of good for the students.”
