Police break up “huge” weekend party

Fleming getting a bad rap for out of control parties

A party held off-campus on Fleming Drive, a popular student-housing complex near the college, attracted quite a bit of unwanted attention last weekend.

The house in question made the news after a party it was hosting got out of hand with, from varying sources, somewhere between 200 and 500 people in attendance.

“We got some loud noise complaints,” said Constable Amy Phillipo, Public Information's Officer with the London Police. “When we went into that area that's when all these incidents started to happen.”

The police became involved when, upon answering a noise disturbance call, the officers found themselves confronted with a group of rowdy students who were throwing everything from beer bottle to insults at the responding police officers. These acts forced the police to call in reinforcements to help break up the party.

“There were reports of windows being smashed,” Phillipo continued. “People ripping boards off of fences and officers were having beer bottles thrown at them. The officers responded to those incidents and as a result certain persons were charged.“

“The college is at this point responding to the allegations of inappropriate behaviour by some of the students,” said Emily Marcoccia, Fanshawe's Manager of Marketing and Communications. “Our understanding is that there was some type of event, and after that an incident that may have involved the students, prompting bad behaviour from the students which spilled out onto the street.”

In response the college intends to send street teams to some of the problematic houses in the hopes of dissuading any more of these problems in the future.

“As a result of this myself and the police will be going out to speak with individuals from the most problematic addresses,” said Glenn Matthews, Fanshawe and UWO's Off-Campus Housing Mediator. “It's not necessarily us saying ‘be good or else' it's a matter of us saying ‘look here's some consequences you can run into.'

“We send packages out to people on Fleming to let them know what to expect renting off campus, but unfortunately it's the old ‘you can take a horse to water but you can't make them drink it' issue.”

Four Fanshawe students were arrested, and two charged following the event at 271 Fleming Drive, and one tasered by responding officers. Those charged are Christopher Guerin, 21, with Obstructing Police and Resisting Arrest and Joshua Bach, 19, with Causing a Distubance.
