Cultures unite at the Shack

Out Back Shack was packed last Thursday with students who came out celebrate cultural diversity, while helping to raise money for an orphan in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

This was the first pub night to be co-sponsored by student clubs. The B.L.A.C.K. Unity Club as well as the Social Justice Club teamed up to make this pub night about breaking down cultural barriers and uniting students.

With a talented D.J. spinning by request, there was opportunity for students to introduce their own culture and talent. Two lovely female students did just that, and took the floor, dancing to Indian beats for the gazing and impressed crowd.

Later on in the night, the presidents of both the B.L.A.C.K. Unity Club and the Social Justice Club got on stage and combined their talents to perform a song together, raising the level of energy in the entire “Out Back Shack.”

As a night to celebrate cultural diversity, it is very positive to note that the entire event was peaceful and without incident. There were no conflicts, nor was there any type of racist behavior that some might expect when students of differing ethnic backgrounds unite.

Executive members of both clubs agreed that the night was a success and that the turnout was quite good considering that it was the first time either club had hosted a pub night, as well as the short notice both had to prepare for this event. They agreed that there should be more cultural jams in the future. There is hope that these types of events will continue to draw people of all cultures together and will create understanding and unity amongst the people of the world.
