Repeat vandalism at greenhouse

Bylaws and budgets were the major topics discussed at the SAC meeting this week. A presentation was given by FSU President Christine Thomson, to outline some amendments being made to the current constitution, while Paul Masse, Business Manager for the FSU, delivered a budget presentation.

According to Jason Wilton, who represents the Art and Design division on SAC, four cars had their windows smashed out with rocks, as well as two of the greenhouse's windows, last Friday night. The vandalism to the greenhouse is a major problem for Horticultural Technician students, because they rely on specific conditions for their plants to grow. These conditions are altered significantly when cold, dry air is allowed to enter the greenhouse. Horticultural Technician students prepare their major projects in the greenhouse, and their final grades depend on the success of these projects. This issue was brought up at the SAC meeting, and the FSU is looking into ways to improve security around the greenhouse, since this is not the first time it has been vandalized.

The executive reports were short with the school year winding down. VP Internal J.P. Renzella, reported that the 30-Hour Famine was a success, with over 65 people attending. Pat Maloney, VP of Entertainment, reported on the many events that will be happening over the last few weeks of school.

Monday, April 9 is Fanshawe night at Laser Quest. It costs $5 to play two games of laser tag and you must sign up ahead of time at the Biz Booth. The last Kick Ass Country Pub of the year will take place Tuesday, April 10 in Forwell Hall, and it is a free, all ages event. Thursday, April 12 is Fanshawe night at Yuk Yuks. The cost is $3 for students, $5 for guests. Tickets are available at the Biz Booth.

Green Pride Day will take place on Wednesday, April 4 at 1 p.m., outside the greenhouse. Landscape Ontario's student chapter, within the Horticulture Technician program, is coordinating this event.

Smoking on campus is another issue that was brought up at Monday's meeting. Many students are not aware that the campus has designated smoking areas. These areas provide ashtrays to keep our campus clean and attractive, and a map of the designated smoking areas is available to students throughout the college.
