Fanshawe athletes honoured for academic accomplishmnets

Several Fanshawe athletes are being recognized for their high-level of performance both academically and athletically.

The Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) announced the 2006-07 SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award recipients on March 21.

Fanshawe College had nine individual recipients for the award, more than every other college in the country, thus earning them the SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award.

Mike Lindsay, manager of athletics at the College said winning the national award meant a lot to the athletic department especially to the coaches, academic support staff and councilors involved with the various athletic programs.

“It is nice to get recognized at the national level for this type of award, as manager of athletics I am very proud, and I am getting accolades from various institutions in the CCAA as a result,” Lindsay said.

Lindsay said the creation of academic awards for athletes helps change their image in a positive fashion.

“The CCAA and the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association go to great lengths to develop these type of academic athlete awards in order to recognize those athletes. For years in Canada and in the States athletes were assumed to be weak academically,” Lindsay said. “So creating these awards has taken it to a different level as far as edifying and recognizing those top scholars.”

Receiving the individual awards from Fanshawe were; Jenn Hayman, badminton; Adrian Pykta, men's basketball, Taylor Knipe, women's basketball, Josh Ackworth, cross-country running; Ben Dobie, cross-country running; Sean Cunningham, cross-country running; Josh Ward, cross-country running; Casey Kulchycki, cross-country running; and Adam St. Laurent, men's soccer.

The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Award is the CCAA's most prestigious student-athlete award, epitomizing their mandate of recognizing excellence in academics and athletics.

To achieve the honour, a student-athlete must be named to his/her respective provincial All-Star teams in a CCAA sport, and must achieve a grade-point-average standing of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent as defined by his/her institution.

“To achieve excellence in both sport and academics requires tremendous skill, dedication and perseverance. SIRC is honoured to recognize those outstanding collegiate student-athletes who are also passionate about excelling in their education,” Debra Gassewitz, president and CEO of SIRC, said.

The SIRC-CCAA Academic All Canadian Recognition Award is presented each year to the college institution with the most student-athlete award recipients.

“Both SIRC and the CCAA share a commitment to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the education purpose,” Sandra Murray-MacDonell, CCAA Executive Director, said. “We are very proud to recognize and celebrate those student-athletes who've achieved academic and athletic excellence.”

Lindsay said that winning the recognition award would help Fanshawe with recruiting athletes to the program, as it shows Fanshawe's commitment to both athletics and academics.

“It puts you on a different playing level, as far as recruiting top athletes who are also academically sound and will win awards,” Lindsay said. “Student athletes in high schools are recognizing and seeing that the support for academic success for athletes is real at Fanshawe.”

The awards will be presented at the 40th annual Athletics Awards Night being held on Friday, April 13 in the Student Centre.
