Reduce, reuse, recycle to save the planet

What do a broom handle, a stray mitten, a broken beer bottle and a baby stroller have in common? They are among the mysterious objects littering my downtown neighbourhood. Now that the weather is warming, I am shocked and disgusted at how much has been carelessly tossed on the ground, hidden by the snow these last few months.

Who does this and why? When did society develop the mentality that convenience now overrules the consequences later? If everyone assumes that “someone else will take care of it”, it may be too late when we realize that WE ALL NEED TO TAKE CARE OF IT. Our world. Our responsibility. Now is the time to take action towards repairing our damaged planet, and minimizing consumption of our natural resources to ensure a sustainable future.

If we all took small steps every day, the impact would be immeasurable. We all know the basics. Recycle, turn off the light, leave your car at home, opt for public transportation and use less water. Take that a step further. Plant a tree, organize a neighbourhood clean up day, join the Fanshawe Green Club for regular updates on what you can do in London, and be active in protests to protect the environment. Be creative, be passionate, be aware. It's time to care about our planet. If we don't, who will?
