Looking for a Campus Idol

The Fanshawe Student Union wants to hear you belt out a tune. The FSU's Campus Idol returns this month.

“We want to include every student,” said FSU Entertainment Programmer Mark Rawson. “We are holding four auditions over two weeks so that everyone has a fair chance to enter.”

The auditions will be held on Monday, March 12 in Forwell Hall at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 13 in the Falcon Residence conference room at 7 p.m, Monday, March 19 in Forwell Hall at 7 p.m, and Tuesday, March 20 in the Peregrine Residence conference room at 7 p.m.

Rawson stressed inclusion is the focus.

“There will be three judges at each audition like American Idol, but there will not be any ‘Simon Cowell' type comments made to any students,” said Rawson. “Our judges will listen to the students sing and silently mark down a score. No one will be made fun of for participating. If the student is a bad singer, the judge's scores will reflect that. We see no reason to embarrass a student for taking part.”

The top three students from each audition will be sent to the Fanshawe Campus Idol Finals at the Out Back Shack on Tuesday, March 27 at 9 p.m. The twelve contestants will each sing three songs at the finals.

“The student who wins Fanshawe's Campus Idol will compete against the other campus winners from around Ontario,” explained Rawson. “The Ontario Finals are held at Niagara College on Saturday, March 31.”

The competition is wide open this year.

“The past two years, we had the same student win Campus Idol here at Fanshawe,” said Rawson. “Our champion Janet Turner has graduated and won't be in this year's competition. She didn't win the Ontario's either year, but she is still singing. We just brought her band in last month to do a Thursday nooner.”

If you've ever sang in the shower or along to the radio, sign up for Fanshawe's Campus Idol. Who knows? You just might surprise yourself!
