Pick up a pen and pack your bags because Fanshawe's International Department is looking for two enthusiastic students to travel to Japan for a cultural exchange.

The students will be chosen to travel to the eastern part of the Kanto Plains, just 120kms from Tokyo, where they will spend a month with a host family while attending Ibaraki Christian College.

“[We are] looking for students who are confident, culturally sensitive, enthusiastic and culturally aware,” said International Student Advisor, Kim Rowe, who is encouraging students to apply for the one month exchange (May-June 2007). “Students who have a real sense of world and global issues with a passion for travel.”

The International Department also requires entrants to be Canadian citizens attending Fanshawe full-time, with at least a “B” average. Students must also be currently in their second, third or fourth-year of a diploma, applied degree or graduating as of June 2007 from a graduate certificate.

In order to be chosen, students must write a 1000-1500 word essay based on one of the following questions; How do you identify yourself as a Canadian?; How would you represent Fanshawe College in this type of cultural exchange?; How would this cultural experience impact your future goals?

The chosen students will be awarded the Fanshawe College International Exchange Award, which consists of the opportunity to take the exchange and airfare to Japan (approximately $1500-$2000 CAD). Students will be required to cover the cost of commuting, lunches and special activity fees (approximately $1200 CAD).

This is the second year the international department has offered the exchange to Ibaraki, and last year's participants, Matthew Schijns and Meaghan Knetsch, both took classes in basic Japanese, Intercultural Communication and entrenched themselves in traditional Japanese culture.

Rowe said while living with a host family, students would have the chance to participate in day-to-day Japanese family activities, as well as an opportunity to experience Japan from the eyes of a student.

Since 1999, Fanshawe has embraced international students and each year Ibaraki sponsors one student to attend this school. Meanwhile, each year many more Ibaraki students travel to Fanshawe and paying their own way to study. Currently, Fanshawe hosts 230 post-secondary and 80 English as a second language international students from 40 different countries.

The deadline for the papers is March 16, 2007 at 4:30pm and students are to submit them electronically to Susan Czypyha sczypyha@fanshawec.ca (with a paper copy to Fanshawe's International Department, E1002).
