Musical Ramblings: New band for metal fans

Dead Man In Reno - Dead Man In Reno

With all the metalcore getting thrown in together (which is deserved, to an extent), it's great to find a band that takes the best things the bands in the genre have already done and put their touch on it, but not so different to make it a different genre of metal.

Dead Man in Reno is going to easily please fans of Unearth, who opened for Slayer last week, DevilDriver and crazy double bass drum work.

On this disc, you'll find the usual stop and go chunk riffs, the odd clean vocal section and unneeded time change. But for every one of those predicable elements, you'll be treated to the unique spins that I alluded to above. The vocal delivery is dark and has a heavy death metal influence, the drumming is better than most metalcore CDs (with another huge emphasis on death metal drumming) and the songs have more than five different parts.

One of the biggest surprises on this disc comes from the track “Cursed” where around the five-minute mark, the band breaks into an huge orchestra section. It really threw-me-off at first but I found it surprising, pleasing and a good prelude to the band kicking back into their heaviness. It worked people.

Just like last week's review, if you're looking for a good, solid entry into your metal CD collection, you don't have to look any further than Dead Man In Reno. There is a lot of promise and potential in this band and I hope enough people pick this up and support them so they can give us a sophomore effort.
