Students vote in favour of dental plan

Fanshawe College students now have a new reason to smile.

The Fanshawe Student Union conducted a successful dental plan referendum by gaining the necessary votes required to include dental in students tuitions costs starting in September 2007.

“We are really happy, we knew that it had passed on the first day but we wanted to make sure in case there was an overwhelming ‘no' group of people or just a bunch of people that didn't get the opportunity to vote that is why we kept all our polling stations open till the end,” FSU President Christine Thomson said.

The total number of students that voted was 4361, approximately 40 per cent of the student population. This total doubles the 20 per cent of the population needed for the referendum to be considered.

3947 voted in favour of the dental plan, 257 students were not in favour and 157 ballots were spoiled.

Spoiled votes include a range of things including not putting a student number on the ballot, a ballot where someone already voted, or a student number on the ballot that was not valid.

Thomson said she was happy with the voting turnout.

“We want students to be able to voice there opinion and I think by having that many kids vote, it showed that that many kids wanted to make sure that their voice was heard and that is fantastic,” Thomson said.

Most of the plan in completed and ready to be implemented but ACL and Associates, who helped the FSU conduct the health plan, will be putting the finishing touches on the plan, according to Thomson.

“It is not a lot of leg work from here on in, just kind of the paper work to make it happen,” Thomson said.

“They (ACL and Associates) will be directing us as to what steps to take next but it has already been an approved fee by the College.”

The dental plan will come into effect in September 2007. For more information, students are asked to contact the FSU.
