Second-year film student, Emma Hurrell is excited to get back on the soccer field next season.

Fanshawe has had many successful performances from its athletes these past few months, and has even wracked up some gold medals. Most people often forget these stars walk among you on campus, so here is a look behind the bench, at the players who are bringing their A-game, and making Fanshawe proud.

Emma Hurrell, number 12, is a defensive player on Fanshawe’s women’s soccer team. The Markham native has been a soccer player her entire life.

“Soccer has been a significant part of my life since I started playing house league when I was five. At seven, I joined the Markham Soccer Club, where I’ve played ever since,” Hurrell said.

After playing her whole life, it was clear that continuing at the collegiate level would be important to her when choosing a school. Hurrell has played two seasons with the Falcons and plans on returning for a third.

“Growing up, I struggled with anxiety and confidence, which impacted my passion and playing time,” she said. “I focused on improving myself through daily workouts and runs. I gained much more confidence, stopped worrying about others’ opinions, and concentrated on giving my best. This change in mindset completely improved the way I played and earned me a spot on Fanshawe College’s varsity soccer team.”

While Hurrell loves the game, that’s not the only thing that has her coming back season after season.

“Soccer means so much to me, not just because I love the game, but because of the amazing players, coaches, and teammates who have supported me. Their encouragement has helped me grow and improve as a player. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

When Hurrell is not on the field, you can find her spending time with her friends or in the film studios, where she completes her studies as a second-year film student who is set to graduate this spring. After graduation Hurrell will continue to fuel her love for soccer by playing in her hometown of Markham’s U21 soccer league, before returning to Fanshawe in the fall for a post grad program and another season with the falcons.

Earlier this year, Fanshawe saw one of their very own go on to the big leagues. Former Fanshawe soccer star Jade Kovacevic, has blazed a trail for women’s soccer.

“Knowing that it’s my school and I’m on that team now, it’s inspiring me to keep going and to continue the sport that I love and I’ve been loving since I was five years-old,” Hurrell said.

After enjoying a restful off-season, Hurrell is excited to return to the field next fall.
