How one Fanshawe Falcon made golf history
Luke Evans and the Fanshawe Falcons soar to the podium at CCAA Golf Championship.
Luke Evans has made history at the CCAA National Championships by winning the first individual gold medal for a Fanshawe Falcon golfer. He excelled throughout the tournament and established a new Fanshawe record, breaking the previous record and securing the championship title.
“It was a mix of emotions,” Evans said when talking about the tournament. “But I was focused on preparing for it. I was confident in all the training and practice we did and that helped with the nerves. Overall, I felt ready for it.”
Evans was unaware of all that he had accomplished during the tournament until reading up on it a few days later.
“I was excited and focused as the tournament was ending. I knew I was playing well, but I was just trying to stay in the moment and not get ahead of myself. When I finished, I didn’t realize I had set a new record — I actually didn’t realize until I read the first article. It was a great feeling, knowing that I had achieved something special while competing at a high level.”
When competing at a high level, it’s important to have a support system. Luckily, Evans said, his coaches and teammates were a huge help throughout the season and going into the tournament.
“My coaches and teammates were incredibly supportive throughout the season. We practiced a lot. It was nice having them to train with and talk with. That made a big difference. We all hang out and have fun and support each other,” said Evans.
Evans is originally from Georgetown but came to Fanshawe for its golf program. He said he had the option of a few schools, but after a phone call with the golfing trainers, he knew then where he would go.
Evans’ dad is who originally got him into golf, but his whole family loves to show their support. He recalled his family coming to his historic tournament.
“My parents and my sister were there the whole time. It meant a lot having them there and cheering me on, especially my dad, he also golfs and he’s the one who got me into the sport.”
As Evans reflected on his season, it’s clear that his hard work, determination, and strong support system played vital roles in his success. With a historic gold medal and a new Fanshawe record under his belt, he is paving the way for future Falcons. Evans said he looks forward to building on this achievement and continuing to grow in the sport he loves, with even more accomplishments lying ahead.
