Dear readers,

When did caring become cringe? During a commencement speech at New York University earlier this summer, Taylor Swift implored a crowd of thousands of graduates to “learn to live alongside cringe.” It was a reminder that no matter how hard we try, there will always be things we look back on in our lives that perhaps do not align with how we live today.

But sometimes (almost always in fact) what is considered cool and uncool changes throughout time. The Twilight Saga, for instance, is currently experiencing an Internet renaissance, and it’s now rather tiresome to suggest lines like, “this is the skin of a killer, Bella,” and “where the hell have you been, loca?” are cringey. We already know. And guess what? We love them anyway.

Or, perhaps we can look at video games and gaming culture. Once viewed as a hapless hobby for the introverted teen, gaming is now an institutionally recognized industry with leagues across the world. Fanshawe Ultimate Esports League (FUEL), for example, is now a member of Esport Canada Post-Secondary (ECPS), a national voice for the development of Esports programs across the nation.

So yes, with our Geek Issue, we are living alongside cringe while also celebrating everything about it. The truth is, today, geeks are at the forefront of culture and technology. So geek out, love things unironically, and rejoice in all your nerdy interests. You might just be onto something.
