Fanshawe women play a perfect pair

Fanshawe's women's soccer team is undefeated after their first two regular season contests.

The Falcons boasted a 4-1 victory over the St. Clair Saints on Saturday, September 17th in the women's home opener. The win marked the first for the newly formed coaching staff led by head coach Eva Havaris.

Fanshawe saw a similar result on Wednesday, September 21st, when they defeated the Redeemer Royals by a score of 3-1. Rookie sensation Melissa Elie scored two goals to lead the Falcons, giving her three on the season.

Maintaining ball control, and solid defensive pressure was evident in Fanshawe's victory over the Saints. Havaris said she wanted the team to make a statement and was pleased with the outcome.

“We've been working all week on being organized defensively,” Havaris said. “We had girls in their right position at the right time and they just moved from there and that's going to work for us.”

Emily Costello, a central part of the Falcon defence, said the team gelled together very well considering the point they are in the season.

“We communicated pretty good and we worked well as a team,” said Costello. “We mesh well as a team, new and old. Now all we can do is improve upon that.”

Clicking on offence were Elie and mid-fielder Lyndsey Bannerman. Elie, who scored her first goal of the season off a beautiful pass from Bannerman, said hustle and communication were also some keys to the Falcons victory; Bannerman agreed.

“It's all coming together,” said Bannerman.

Elie continued her offensive outburst against the Royals, scoring two of the teams three goals. Her first goal came just two minutes into the contest.

“She is going to be a stand-out player for us this season,” said assistant coach Cecily Clarke. “The first time she got the ball she scored.”

The Falcons continued to work on organization in the defensive end against Redeemer, and seemed to be the first to every loose ball. Clarke said proper positioning and hard work are the reasons for the positive result.

“We've been putting a really big emphasis on fitness,” said Clarke, “so I think in the second half the girls had a little bit more energy because we've been running them pretty hard in practice.”

Ashley Strocki and Carley Warner shared the goaltending duties for both the games against St. Clair and Redeemer.

The Falcons will put their undefeated record on the line on Tuesday, September 27th, when the women host the Mohawk Mountaineers.
