Emily of New Moon by Lucy Maud Montgomery
This first installment of the Emily of New Moon series tells the story of Emily Starr, a sensitive young girl whose entire world changes because of the death of her beloved father. She is beginning a new and challenging life with her extended family, the Murray's.

Published in 1923, this classic novel is a favourite of mine because both the humorous and painful situations Emily finds herself in throughout the novel are easy to relate to and are written to be an honest reflection of human nature. Some of the many themes that are present in the novel include: dealing with loss, adjusting to new situations, growing up and developing new relationships.

Emily is just a young girl in Emily of New Moon. She is proud, imaginative and loves to write. She loves her father and her little home in Marwood, Prince Edward Island.

Early in the novel, the reader is welcomed into Emily's home in Marwood, where she lives with her father and a cantankerous housekeeper named Ellen Greene. The death of her father results in Emily being orphaned and her extended family, the Murray's, must take over her up bringing.

After Emily makes a horrible impression on most of the Murray's, it is decided that she will move in with the Murray of New Moon's farm, which is located in Blair Water. Aunt Elizabeth is the “boss” of New Moon and proves to be very difficult to get along with for Emily. She is especially disgruntled with Emily's habit of “writing things out,” along with many of the other un-Murray-like habits that Emily possesses.

Aunt Laura is sweet and sympathetic and cousin Jimmy immediately becomes close friends with Emily. Much of the grief Emily suffers at New Moon is the result of her clashes with Aunt Elizabeth. These conflicts are both amusing and easy to relate to.

Although she struggles to fit in both at home and at school, Emily gradually develops some true friends, Ilse, Teddy and Perry. Despite her continuous struggle to please Aunt Elizabeth, Emily enjoys an increasing number of improvements in her life as the story goes on.

Emily of New Moon can be purchased for $5.99 on www.chapters.ca. It is also available for free at the London Public Library, Central Branch. I encourage you to follow Emily through all of her joys and struggles as she strives to become part of the family at New Moon farm and part of the community in Blair Water.
