New Sarum Diner worth the driver to Elgin County

The New Sarum Diner is absolutely one of my most favourite places to eat, despite the fact it takes about a half hour to drive to, and is located right between St. Thomas and Aylmer at the end of highway 74 just before reaching Highway 3.

It may sound like quite a distance to drive but I certainly think it's worth it. Need a little convincing, why don't you make a day of it and explore Elgin County and top it off with dinner at the Diner. I'll even help you get started with an adventure by suggesting that you navigate the Belmont Corn Maze (http://www.belmontcornmaze.com/), travel a little further and stop at Quai Du Vin Estate Winery (http://www.quaiduvin.com/) and or Rush Creek Wines to sample and buy some fabulous wine or fruit wines. Travel a little further and visit Sparta and check out Winter Wheat folk art store (http://www.winter-wheat.com/) and tour the grounds. You can't drive through Sparta without stopping at Anything Used & Sparta Country Candles (http://www.spartacandles.com/Netscape/indexNN.html) and the little shops in the area as well. You can visit Peter Robson's art gallery or Linda Sanderson's gallery. Your significant other will love the time well spent with one another, and by the time your done with all this activity you should have worked up a monster appetite that New Sarum Diner will surely extinguish.

New Sarum Diner, operating since 1943 is known for its chicken dinners, roasted to perfection and served with all the trimmings. The chicken meals come with a hearty bowl of soup, usually a pair of choices. A quarter chicken dinner is priced at $11.99, for the hungrier $12.99 plates you a half chicken. For the truly starved you can order the all you can eat chicken with unlimited fixings for $13.99. The mashed potatoes taste fantastic, and the dressing has great flavour. The side of veggies varies depending what is in season.

Don't like chicken you say, well there's enough variety on the menu to satisfy any palate. If you like seafood, there is grilled sea bass, rainbow trout, salmon or ocean perch. Looking for something different, there is steak, grilled ham, chops and schnitzel, Oktoberfest sausage and liver and onions. The pot roast is just like mom would make and the ribs are tender and flavourful. All entrees include soup or juice, fresh bread and veggie and potato. Prices range from around $9 to about $17 depending on what you're ordering.

Like any diner they also offer up a variety of hot sandwiches, classic sandwiches like a Reuben, clubhouse or beef dip, fish and chips, burgers and some awesome tasting meat loaf if you like that sort of thing. There are also a variety of appetizers if you so choose to go that route as well.

Like all good diners this one also opens for breakfast. Unfortunately for me I haven't had the opportunity to have breakfast here (I love the chicken dinner), but checking out their menu it's what you would expect, and the pricing is beyond reasonable. If the portions are anything like their dinner fare then you should be more than satisfied.

The Diner has two distinct areas, the older diner area and the larger dining room area. There is also a banquet hall for those holding a reception. The place is dotted with interesting relics from the past including an original Wurlitzer jukebox and a cigar store Indian.

What normally makes or breaks' dining out for me is the quality of service and at the New Sarum Diner the staff is courteous and friendly. What I love about the New Sarum Diner is that the food is reasonably priced, the meals taste like authenticate home cooking and I've never left hungry.
