President's Perspective: Loads of students in Pres's SAC

When the entire Board of the Fanshawe Student Union is elected, it is like our family coming together. To celebrate that, we go on a fabulous retreat. Now, it is at a secret location so I cannot disclose that information to you at this time, but I will definitely give reviews when I return.

Our full board consists of 17 members. We have our President, five Vice Presidents, the Past President, and 10 Division Representatives, one from each academic division. It is a big table, with a lot of different minds and opinions. The divisional reps, aka SAC, who are about to be elected this week, are the ones who will be making a difference to our college for the next six months.

The candidates this year have had a different flavour to them than in the two years past. They have an energy about them that is seriously blowing me away. I can't believe the level of competition that has come out in this year's SAC election. This is a great thing!

Competition is a driving force behind all good corporations, plus, the adrenaline rush has never been a bad thing.

Seriously though, through the three SAC elections I've seen, this year's crop of candidates is poised to make all future campaigners look totally weak.

Reading the articles that were written by the candidates in the paper is the first view that I get into their ideas of what they think the FSU is all about and what they want to do to make Fanshawe College better for students.

The underlying theme this year is that these kids want to do a good job. And they will. To me, that shows dedication and desire - ask any student leader at any school that can be really tough to find!

This year is going to be so fabulous; there is no way it will be topped! This is a pool of talent that is going to rattle the feeble and make many think twice about why they didn't jump at the opportunity of running for council.

This year we had 23 students run for positions. Again, that's huge. The fact that so many people are running is making it quite an exciting race. Here are the ways you can find out more about the candidates:

- Read last week's newspaper. The candidates have photos and bios printed about what they want to do to make Fanshawe College a better place
- Hit up the FSU website, www.fsu.on.ca.

Now, by the time you read this, our new candidates will be chosen. In fact, by the time you read this, I will have already had my celebratory nachos and beer at the Out Back Shack. And maybe even some chicken fingers if I really feel up to it.

We are, however, still missing candidates for the Tourism & Hospitality Division. So if you know anyone who you think would be great, send the student (or an email) up to me.

The point of my article this week is to welcome our new Student Administrative Council members to the table. I look forward to working with all of you, and I am thrilled that you joined us. I can't wait to continue the great year we are already having. And now that our little “FSU” family is complete, I can begin to cry my tears of joy.
