Dysfunctional Sports: Domi's dysfunctional relationship

Talk about being a headline stealer for the week.

Former Toronto Maple Leaf enforcer Tie Domi has been making headlines first with his retirement last week from professional hockey, and his new job as a broadcaster with The Sports Network (TSN).

Now Tie has been accused by his wife of having an affair with Belinda Stronach, the Ontario's Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) who in 2001 was voted the most powerful businesswoman in Canada by The National Post.

Last week it was all celebration and a time to look back on his career, a career that made him the third most penalized player in National Hockey League (NHL) history. Tie wanted to stay loyal to the Toronto Maple Leafs but being a 36 year-old with a total of 16 points last season very few teams, including the Leafs, wanted Domi's services thus making retirement inevitable.

Domi will never go down in NHL history for his goal scoring ablity or his hockey talents, but will always be remembered for fighting guys like Bob Probert, Marty McSorley, and Peter Worrell. The fights with Probert were classic and had hype similar to bouts between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, or Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior. The outcome of those fights will be argued for years to come but what all hockey fans will agree on is Domi never backed down from the toughest in the NHL.

Domi will begin his new career as a broadcaster for TSN. This in its self has caused controversy because Domi has never really been very popular with the media. TSN hired Domi for his controversial opinions and Domi even said that they might have to put him on a 60-second delay to make sure any obscenities don't get to air.

Currently plastered in the media, Domi's wife has accused him of adultery with Stronach. Domi's hockey career is over so he went and found himself a Sugar mommy.

Stronach, who has been divorced twice and has two children from a previous marriage, is the daughter of Frank Stronach the founder of Magna International, the largest auto parts manufacturer in Canada. Court documents that were filed last week revel that Leanne Domi stated that she was offered a $1.5 million dollar home and $1 million dollar cash from her estranged husband to keep Stronach's name out of the media.

It's also not the first time Domi used his “non-hockey stick” to make his wife mad. Leanne Domi also accused him of having an affair with former Wayne's World star Tia Carrere in 1999. Some of the other allegations against Domi in the divorce papers state that Domi accuses Leanne Domi of wasting his money.

“You are now the ex-Mrs. Domi and you had better get used to not getting any more special treatment. You will get nothing. You are spending all my money and it has to stop. Where did you get that purse? Is that new? You are spending all my money,” Domi allegedly said in the statement.

Well Tie it looks like she will be spending all your money because of all the nasty stuff flying around the media this week. With all the parties involved lawyers reached a temporary settlement Tuesday, with Leanne Domi seeking about $45,000 a month in child and spousal support.

I don't buy purses myself but I'm sure you can get some really nice ones with that kind of money. And even with Tie's new job at TSN maybe he can get a part-time job at Magna to help him out in the crunch.
