Expand your horizons at this year's International Week

International Week will be held on the week of Feb. 1. It is a week, held annually, where the International Centre of Fanshawe College allows networking opportunities for students from various programs to get involved in their own communities and learn more about cultural differences from different countries.

Every year, Fanshawe College welcomes students from more than 60 countries and the International Centre strives to provide a welcoming and homey feeling to all these students in order to make it easy for them to settle down comfortably in a foreign country, and the International Week is just one way of doing this.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Explore the World’.

“We really wanted to include as many cultures as we can,” said Karen Elena Tejada, co-organizer of the event.

The event starts on Monday, Feb. 1, with Cultural Expo, which involves the opening ceremony where students will perform; this will be followed by Latin dance lessons in the evening put on by Tejada, who herself is from the Dominican Republic.

On Tuesday, there is an immigration seminar in the morning, followed by a World Fashion Showroom and Fashion Show in the evening where students will display fashion from their native culture.

Wednesday starts with an informative seminar on exchange information in the afternoon and speed networking at the same time. Then there is a gathering in the evening at Out Back Shack where popular songs from various cultures in different languages will be played for the audience to dance and have fun.

The event is not only for the international students, it is also for the domestic students in order to build relationships between them. With reference to building a connection amongst the students, Thursday is dedicated to Canada day.

The day starts with a Canadian breakfast followed by an information session that will help the students to decide on which degrees to take. Tickets for the breakfast are available at the International Centre located in E2025. In the evening, students can go to Victoria Park to try their hand at ice skating.

With Friday being the last day of International Week, there are two activities planned. There is a language mash-up in the morning where students can talk to volunteers from different countries and learn common and popular phrases in foreign languages.

To conclude the event, there is a Lunar New Year, popularly known as the Asian New Year, celebration in the evening. This has been a Fanshawe tradition for five years.

The event includes a Chinese buffet dinner with sushi and entertainment.

“The New Year originally falls on Feb. 7 this year, but we are including the celebration in the International Week so that everyone can participate,” said Chen Shi, who works with international applications in the International Centre and also organized the New Year event. The tickets to participate for the Chinese New Year are available at the Fanshawe International Centre. There will be tour prices among the participants attending the Chinese dinner.
