The holiday lull played no role in how both the men and women’s varsity volleyball teams came out in their first league games of 2016.

Men’s volleyball

On the Jan. 10, the Falcons travelled to Sheridan College to take on the Bruins. They won the game winning three of four sets. The win brought their record up to 10-2.

“It was a really tough first match coming back after the Christmas break because Sheridan has added a couple of new starters so we definitively knew they were going to be tougher than the first time we played them,” said Patrick Johnston, head coach of the men’s volleyball team.

Even with the rough start, Johnston was happy the team was able to come together, not overlook the Bruins and get the win.

The win allowed the Falcons to hold onto their top spot in the OCAA West Division and ranked them fifth in the CCAA.

“With the group of the guys that we have, from the start of the season it has been a [goal of an] OCAA championship, I think that hasn’t changed at all.”

The Falcons will take on Niagara at their home court on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Women’s volleyball

The women’s volleyball team also headed to Sheridan College to take on the Bruins and though it was close, they managed to win all three sets.

“Game plan [went] exactly as we had it, so I am very pleased with how we played and handled that match,” said Sean Pellow, head coach of the women’s volleyball team.

The win improved their record to 9-3 in the OCAA West Division. Currently, the Falcons sit in second place.

“I am looking forward to seeing how they do down the stretch, we have six matches left and I think we need to win most of those to position ourselves well for playoffs.”

And Pellow has no doubt that the girls can do it.

The women’s team will take on Niagara on Saturday, Jan. 23 at home.
