Adopt-A-Falcon to support varsity athletes

Adopt-A-Falcon is Fanshawe's new program created to raise funds for varsity athletic teams.

As noted on Fanshawe athletics' website, “The Adopt-A-Falcon program provides an avenue for alumni, friends, family and staff to stay involved in a proud Fanshawe Falcons Athletics Legacy.”

This program is the response to demand for competitive bursary and scholarship options available for prospective varsity athletes.

Nathan McFadden, manager of athletics, noted that funds are needed for a variety of reasons.

“In order for Fanshawe Athletics to continue to compete for national championships and provide extraordinary student-athlete experiences, it is imperative that we are able to recruit top caliber student-athletes with exceptional character,” Mc- Fadden said.

He added that bursaries and scholarships “help all of our student- athletes and continue our tradition of excellence at Fanshawe.”

Not only will the money go to a scholarship incentive program, but also a College Varsity Athletic Bursary that helps athletes with financial needs.

They will also be dispersing the funds raised into team development, such as non-conference travel and hosting, as well as sport science support, program enhancements, equipment and team apparel.

Due to the large time commitment that is involved with varsity sports, which includes not only practice and game time but also the travel time involved with away games, varsity athletes are simply not able have a part time job while in school like other students.

McFadden believes that student- athletes have to learn many skills in relation to their studies, not just time management, but also financial management.

He hopes that the Adopt-A-Falcon program will be a positive thing that can generate money to help alleviate some of the stress that many varsity athletes face when trying to pay for their studies.

A great aspect of this program is that it allows those who donate to choose which team and which aspect they would like their donation to go to.

Varsity teams included in this program are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's baseball, men's and women's badminton, men's basketball, men's volleyball, men's indoor soccer, men's and women's golf, women's softball, men's and women's curling, women's basketball, women's volleyball and women's indoor soccer.

Donors can choose any donation amount they would like, with suggested amounts being $1000, $500 or $250. Donors are also able to choose whether their donation will occur annually, monthly or onetime.

Catherine Finlayson, executive director of advancement and alumni at Fanshawe College, believes in this program and in student athletics as a whole.

“The benefits of playing a sport go well beyond the enjoyment of the game. Team sports teach skills in leadership, teamwork, fair play and time management. These attributes are also the cornerstones of citizenship and success in all walks of life. When you make a donation for athletics your gift lasts a lifetime.”
