Leather jackets, scarves, leggings and knee-high boots are just a few of the items that are in style for this fall.

As the colours of the leaves change, so do the colours you see in someone’s outfit. Popular fall colours according to Flare magazine are burgundy, russet, mustard and navy, and Victoria Arsenault, a Broadcast Journalism student at Fanshawe with a keen taste in fashion added maroon, brown, orange and beige to that list.

Plum and deep teal are other of colours that are filling up the stores. Arsenault also said that scarves are an easy accessory because you can get them in virtually any colour, and boots are a huge trend that are easy to match with any outfit.

Arsenault even goes as far as to have dark nail polish on for fall to go with the change in colour palette.

Focusing on footwear, it’s good to start from the ground up. Overthe- knee black or brown leather boots are easy to coordinate an outfit around, but InStyle says suede is the way to go whether you prefer the over-the-knee, knee high or ankle boots. One newer popular style is the ‘midi’ boot, which sits at the lower half of your calf. If your outfit is one that calls for shoes you can never go wrong with a pair of black flats, or a good old pair of suede sneakers for that matter, but for those feeling adventurous, block-heels in black or grey are also an option.

While classic blue jeans are an obvious choice, one could go with black or brown, or a pair of leggings or tights and a skirt. Graduate of Humber’s Fashion Arts program Victoria LaRussa emphasized the importance and potential benefits of layering.

“Layers are key for fall because the mornings are usually chilly, but by the afternoon it’s warm… Girls can bring their summer dresses into fall by layering tights underneath with a cardigan or sweater over top.”

Trench coats or longer dress coats are a good outer layer for keeping the wind off of your legs if you’re in a dress or skirt, but the short, bomber-style jacket has also made a comeback. A colourful scarf is a good way to top off a simple outfit to spice it up a bit, and if you’re someone who likes a new handbag to go with an ensemble, InStyle says the saddle bag style purse as well as the ‘bucket’ bag are two trends to look into.

Now for the gentlemen; according to menswear retailer Harry Rosen, check shirts with darker blues and plum, or light berry colours are what to look for right now. If you’re feeling extravagant, you could even find a tie opposite from the shirt on that spectrum for some nice contrast.

If a full suit is what you’re looking for, Sharp Magazine says there are some that would be perfect for the fickle conditions of a Canadian fall. Flannel suits are a good choice since the fabric is light and breathable, and also come in a variety of colours. There are also many different types of wool fabrics to look for that won’t be as heavy as what you might need in the winter.

A wool blazer with a cotton button down is a little more casual outfit you could go for. Even more casual is the old stand-by plaid cotton or flannel button down, jeans and a pair of boots.

A short bomber or infantry style jacket is useful for fall if you haven’t quite decided whether you’re up for a pea coat or other longer coat, and if it gets chillier than expected a vest is a good extra layer.

While a lot of people joke that in Canada we only get summer and winter it’s good to be prepared for our short fall season.
