From LED lights to cement barricades, the campus planning and capital development team is trying to guarantee the safety of Fanshawe students.

“What we are trying to do is encourage pedestrians to use the crosswalk further down towards the front of T-building,” said Shawn Harrington, senior manager of campus planning and capital development at Fanshawe.

“We have put a railing in [at T-building] and are going to do some plantings as well to keep people from cutting across where all the traffic is [at Oxford street],” Harrington said.

As well as the railings, the team is implementing signs with solar powered LED flashing lights to create a more evident crosswalk and warn drivers of the upcoming crosswalk.

A facility management and community safety press release states, “Over the next couple of weeks you will see changes to signs, crosswalks and additional barriers to alert drivers and direct pedestrians to use the crosswalks.”

The release advised students to obey the signs and use the crosswalks when exiting buses and crossing London Lane.

To deter students who are getting off the bus from walking into traffic and jeopardizing their safety, the campus planning team is implementing openings where only the bus doors will be.

“Students who get off [the bus] will have to walk down to the crosswalk,” Harrington said.

For accessibility, the campus planning team is implementing more ramps along the sidewalks for both scooters and wheelchairs.

Although majority of the work is done, the concrete barriers in front of T-building are holding the place for the actual cement barriers, which will be implemented later this week.

“We are trying to make it safer for students and pedestrians when they walk the crosswalk into the building,” Harrington said. “That is the ultimate goal.”
