Alternative summer jobs to try

It's a messy job, but it's also one that helps to pay the bills. House painting is just one of many options students have in the summer.

Most of you have already planned out your summers in some sense. Some of you will be travelling, some of you will be lazing by the pool or at the beach and some of you will be working. Although the first two options sound amazing, the latter one is the wisest and will give you a greater return for your time spent. Listed below are some of the top summer jobs for college students to help you make enough money to save for school and have a good time.

Bartender

Hello, tips. Remember the last time you went out and had a little too much to drink? Remember waking up the next morning and wondering where all your money went? Well, being a bartender puts you on the receiving side of that disappearing money. People are generous when they’re drinking. Plus, you get to check out all the hot guys and girls from a VIP standpoint (read: you’re the one with the booze). Not a bad way to spend your summer.

Being a server would also qualify here, except your tips may not be as good. This is, however, still a good option.

Nanny

Have you always dreamt of travelling internationally? Here’s your chance. There are tons of jobs for international nannies, and in most cases, they provide your living arrangements as well as pay you. You will have the opportunity to be submersed in a new culture and discover a new part of the world. This sounds like a dream job for me – minus the children.

Landscaper/house painter

It seems like every time you walk into a bus shelter there is a poster hanging up looking for students to work in landscaping or house painting. They pay well and you will definitely have saved up a lot of money by the end of the summer. This would be a great job for you if you’re the type of person who just wants to buckle down and work hard for a few months.

Customer service rep

Call centres are constantly looking for new people to hire. In fact, I’m pretty sure working at Stream – right across from the college – is almost a right of passage for every college student or Londoner. Seriously, you can go anywhere and find someone who used to work there. And yes, I worked there too. And so did my boyfriend. And my best friend. And – well you get the point.

Farm worker

One of my friends travels the world for months – sometimes years – at a time. When she comes home she is quickly and easily able to find a job working at a farm. It is dirty work, but farm owners provide her with a place to live, and she is able to save up enough money in a few months to take off on her next wild adventure.

These are all good choices for a summer job. There are many other options as well. Whatever you decide to do with your summer, have a safe and happy one. See you all in the fall.
