Fanshawe ranked high internationally

In a survey conducted worldwide, Fanshawe College ranked second in the world and first among Ontario colleges for student satisfaction. The survey included responses from 183 post-secondary institutions and was conducted through international students.

This is the fourth year Fanshawe has participated in the survey – i-graduate International Student Barometer (ISB) survey – and has performed well historically, according to Wendy Curtis, executive director of international at Fanshawe.

“Fanshawe is always prepared to learn how we can provide the best possible experience to students from the time they make their decision to the time they graduate,” Curtis said.

In an email, Brianne Dos Santos, Fanshawe’s international projects and exchange co-ordinator, said that 14 institutions from across Canada participated – nine colleges in Ontario, two colleges from other provinces and three universities in Canada.

Because the survey requires responses from international students, of course every institution makes international students a priority.

“What Fanshawe has always been very [mindful] about is making sure that the experience of the international student is representative of what the college is all about from start to finish,” Curtis said. “I think that’s really helped our student satisfaction results because we’re very consistent in terms we demonstrate every day we are what we attest to be.”

Out of the 1,500 international students at Fanshawe, 331 partook in the survey (22 per cent).

“That’s comparable to what other institutions would have,” Curtis said.

Curtis says the college generally ranks high – top 10 internationally and top five in Ontario. What made the difference to shoot Fanshawe high in the ranks this year?

“Year in and year out where we do exceptionally well is with our faculty,” she said. “We’ve always done well … we’re consistently exceptional across the institution. That’s the other key here for me is really that it is an institution-wide commitment that we will focus on students.”

While international students are the primary source for this particular survey, Curtis stresses the importance of creating the best atmosphere for all students.

“It’s a good atmosphere for all students because that’s at the core of what we do,” she said. “We have some unique programs certainly, but we really differentiate ourselves based on providing the most relevant, cost-effective route to employment.”

So how now can Fanshawe move forward knowing these results?

“What it helps us to do is always make sure we are – as an institution … it helps us to be at the top of our game all the time.”

Curtis also says the college can continue working on being more efficient and targeted.

“We pay a lot of attention to international students – along with domestic students – because that is the workforce,” she said. “We want to make sure that when we welcome students here – domestic or international – they stay. Fanshawe provides the fastest most relevant route to employment that helps keep the economy strong.”

“I personally feel really proud to be able to talk about Fanshawe College to the world.”
