Highbury-Oxford collisions at a high in 2014

The Highbury Avenue and Oxford Street intersection had the second highest number of collisions in 2014 in London, according to a London Police Service media release.

There were 77 collisions at the intersection last year, one short of the Wellington Road and Commissioners Road intersection.

Other intersections on Oxford were also on the list, including Oxford and Wonderland Street with 73, Oxford and Wharncliffe Road with 68 and Oxford and Adelaide Street and Oxford and Richmond Street with 56 each.

There were over 10,000 collisions last year in London. This is the highest number of collisions in the past five years and an increase of six per cent from 2013. LPS gave 2,187 offence notices to drivers holding or using hand-held electronic communications devices, an increase of 30 per cent from the previous year.

The fine for driving while holding or using a hand-held communications electronic devices in Ontario is $280.

“What dollar amount can you put on somebody’s life?” said Fanshawe College Spec. Const. Brent Arseneault. “It’s time to buckle up, phone down, pay attention to the road and stop an unnecessary act.”
