Best greasy-spoon near campus

When it comes to dining out Fanshawe students are blessed with a treasure trove of some of the best diners in London being only a short distance away. Arguably the best of the bunch would be the Del-Mar located at 1677 Dundas St, just east of Second past Blockbuster Video.

The Del-Mar has been an east London fixture for over 50 years. The family-run operation has a diverse menu that will satisfy any hunger from breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I must admit the Del-Mar is one of my favourite places to eat. And when it comes to getting a home cooked meal at an excellent price, the Del-Mar is unbeatable.

The restaurant's all-day breakfast menu offers up what you would expect at modest prices. Those looking to save a loonie on a beverage can order up Gus's Best Deal, which includes a choice of bacon, sausage or ham, two eggs, toast and home fries and a coffee or tea for under $6. And let me tell you, I think the home fries here are the best in the city. They serve up real potatoes -hey what a concept- that are just as good naked as they are with ketchup. Those more interested in pancakes won't be disappointed as you'll have trouble putting away the thick cakes this place dishes out.

Lunch offers a wide variety of sandwiches, including standard diner fare as hot turkey. The clubhouse is another popular item, no surprise either since it's a triple decker stacked to stuff your appetite. Again prices are modest. The homemade six ounce burger is thick, juicy and tasty. Even I have a hard time putting this baby away.

Dinner also offers up a wide range of entrees from fish to chops to steak and everything in between. The daily specials change, and you usually have four to choose from. They generally include choice of soup or juice, salad, entrée, beverage and dessert. Prices range from $8.95 to $11.95 depending on the item.

If you choose to visit the Del-Mar though, don't get locked into the time of day you're there at. You can order just about anything off their menu at any time.

What makes the Del-Mar truly a treasure is the staff. If you're a coffee-aholic then I'd be surprised if your cup would ever run empty. While in many chain restaurants you almost have to beg to get a refill, your coffee is always topped up at the Del-Mar. Oh, did I mention that the coffee is excellent! On my most recent breakfast excursion, my guests and I in a span of an hour had our cups topped off seven-eight times. Now that's service. To top it off the wait staff is personable, friendly and always remember a face.

If you are already pining away for mom's cooking, don't jump on the next Greyhound home, instead head on over to the Del-Mar (a 20 minute walk from Fanshawe) for some home-style cooking that will surly help you get over the blues. Once in, you'll find yourself hooked on the Del-Mar and will make it a regular stop.
