Around the Ring: SummerSlam teeters on edge of quality PPV

The summer has come and gone and so has the 19th SummerSlam. Was it exciting? Was it full of action. Well, sort of. I believe that this SummerSlam sums up how the WWE has been doing for the past four months and I believe that it's a good way to start off the year.

Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
Let's start off with shaking our fists at Vince McMahon and friends for STILL soaking the Eddie Guerrero death and now involving his widow, Vickie, into the whole soap. For the love of God, let Eddie rest in peace and have your bonehead writers come up with something else. This match had some good spots in it but the sickening feeling I get from knowing what surrounds this match and the end where Vickie accidentally costs Rey (the former champ who ALWAYS lost) the match. Going from world champ to being beaten by Kerwin White, I mean Chavo. What a load of crap.

ECW Champ, The Big Show vs. Sabu
Ok, so The Big Show is a WWE wrestler trying to bring prestige to the bingo hall title, while Sabu has bled for ECW and still has to lay down for the giant who always seemed to lose any possible match when on Raw or Smackdown. I have to cringe watching Sabu some times. The guy is great and I respect what he's done but botching two to three moves per match is just crazy. Yes, he should slow himself down but when you're working with The Big Slow, you have to keep the energy up in the ring. Poor Sabu lost this one.

Randy Orton vs. Hulk Hogan
Boy, was this match hard to watch. I have to give it to Shawn Michaels now because at least when he did his match with Hogan and his limited moves, HBK brought out a good match. Unfortunately, Hogan's bad knee, limited moves and Orton's inexperience gave us a painful match. The ending was pure garbage with Hogan laying out Orton with a big boot and then wasting about 30 seconds playing to the crowd only to have Orton STILL lie there for the leg drop and easy pin. C'mon…this match was all about politics.

Mick Foley vs. Ric Flair in a “I Quit” match
This was the match my friends and I ordered the PPV for. Flair has been actually quite a good worker this summer and has put himself in many different matches, winning some and losing some but always keeping his professionalism. This was one bloody match with Flair being cut wide open from barbed wire and having the most thumbtacks in him that I've ever seen. Mind you, the WWE blew the ending again by having Melina come into the ring and making Mick Foley say that he quits because he did not want her hurt. BORING! An abrupt and stupid ending to what was one of the matches of the night.

Batista vs. King Booker
If I have to hear Booker T talk like a “king” anymore, I'm going to puke. This match was horrible and showed Batista's ring rust. The boring chants should have started here because there really wasn't any redeeming value to this one. Oh yeah, Booker won by disqualification, of course.

DX vs. the McMahons
When DX came back it was exciting. Nostalgia was in the air and for two-three weeks, the feud was ok. Now it's been soaked to death I want DX to break up, Vince to get off of TV and this feud to end. It was interesting to see HHH out on the floor for most of the match while HBK took the majority of the beatings until the inevitable comeback of DX would give them the win. Predictable.

John Cena vs. Edge for the WWE Championship
I have to say that I'm not on the John Cena hate-bandwagon. This feud has probably been one of my favourites the last little while. These two work solid matches together and have excellent promos and vignettes leading up to their matches. This match had some good classic back and forth action but once again, the WWE blew the finish by having Edge get passed brass knuckles from Lita and smoking Cena with them for an easy pin.

This was a very disappointing PPV with horrible endings to the matches. Seven matches, no women's championship match, no tag championship matches, no U.S. or Intercontinental title matches and no Cruiserweight matches. Do you see something wrong here? I sure do. The WWE has been coasting through the summer and their laziness and lack of knowing what the fans want to see was shown during this PPV. Thank goodness I ordered the TNA Wrestling PPV the week before because I'd hate wrestling right now if I didn't know something better is DEFINITELY possible. I have to give this PPV a 4 out of 10.
