Health Habit of the Week: Kick that energy drink to the curb

Q. What are the risks of energy drinks? Is it worth it for a jolt of energy?

A. Energy drinks are not worth the risk for the short amount of time you get the energy because they tend to make you crash and feel worse than you did before. The caffeine and other chemicals in energy drinks are known to cause a rise in heart rate, which can be dangerous to people with heart conditions or individuals under the age of 18. The amount of sugar in energy drinks can contribute to diabetes or even cancer in extreme cases.

The best thing to do is avoid drinks with high concentrations of caffeine or sugar. If you need a burst of energy, try having a glass of water since dehydration can make you feel sluggish. Also, natural sugars found in fruits can give you the jump-start that you need in the morning.
