It's time to shine for a good cause

The word hot on thousands of students? lips returning to college and university this year is Shinerama.

Shinerama has shaken our nation for over 40 years and shows no signs its success dying out.

If you haven?t heard yet, Shinerama is Canada?s largest student fundraiser. As students, this is our chance to show Canada that we are capable of great things and can change the lives people everywhere.

Cystic fibrosis is a deadly inherited disease, which is carried by one in every 25 Canucks. The scary part is most of us have no clue, and your child could be the next child affected.

Cystic fibrosis used to be seen as a death sentence; at times claiming victims before they even entered kindergarten.

In 1964 a Wilfred Laurier student joined forces and started shining shoes, automobiles, and the town; and life began to be brighter for those fighting CF.

With many medical breakthroughs since, the average life expectancy has been raised to 37, and in some cases CF patients are living past 45.

So why do over 37,000 students nationwide volunteer their time and fight CF on their weekend?

Because CF is a disease that kills young people young people that are our friends and peers.

Candice Collver, a first-year student of Pre-Health Sciences at Fanshawe College, has been living with cystic fibrosis her entire life.

?This is extremely important or I am unable to do what most people take for granted. [Like] BREATHE,? said Collver.

Our efforts with Shinerama help fund research, treatment, patient services, education, and many other things including expensive medications. These medications and therapy treatments are vital.

To start the fundraising off right, your Shinerama crew will be hosting a Shinerama Pub at The Out Back Shack on Thursday, September 7. Doors open at 9 p.m. and we will be selling Shinerama-style treats, like candy and glow sticks.

Catch us all over campus on Friday, September 8 throughout the day when we will be blitzing for donations.

For all first-year students, those wanting to make friends, and all Fanshawe students - Shinerama is the place to be on Saturday, September 9.

Volunteers are to meet in the Oasis in the Student Centre at 9 a.m., and from there we will hit the town shining London for cash.

Volunteers are reminded to bring their bus pass, frosh t-shirt (if you have one), and your cool friends, or even people you don?t know. At 4 p.m. all the volunteers are invited to kick it back and eat some tasty free BBQ.

As a volunteer you?ll be showered with gifts, prizes, and water if you?re at one of our three soaking car washes. Don?t worry about food for Shine day we?ve got you covered with munchies, while Coca-Cola and Mac?s will quench your thirst. Or you can drink the hose water!

One lucky volunteer will win a $500 cheque towards their tuition, thanks to Shinerama sponsors ACL & Associates and Martin Building Maintenance.

Shinerama has been an exciting tradition in London since 1968 and at Fanshawe College since 1999. To date Fanshawe students have raised nearly $47,000.00 for people suffering with CF.

This year, our goal is to raise $15,000, while nationally, Shinerama has set the random target of $1,009,782.47.

Although our main objective is to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis among students and the community, get as many students out as possible and beat CF once and for all.
