No Valentine? No problem!

What to do if you're single on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is basically a day to show off your relationship. It's a mushy, lovey-dovey occasion for couples to give one another flowers and chocolate and show how much they appreciate each other.

It can be a really nice day for those people who are in relationships, but if you are single, V-Day can seem slightly daunting. Here are a few suggestions of things you can do on Valentine's Day to avoid feeling lonely.

1. Go to the gym. It may seem like a lame suggestion at first, but working out releases a lot of stress and anger. When you have finished a strong workout, you will leave the gym feeling refreshed and good about yourself.

2. Be your own date. Treat yourself to something nice! Have a nice relaxing bath, eat whatever you want, and buy yourself that fancy expensive item you've been eyeing for months. Pampering yourself will lift your mood.

3. Have a night in. Curl up on the couch in your pajamas with some of your favourite action movies (no love stories allowed!) and some guilty-pleasure snacks. If you're going to spend the night alone, you might as well enjoy it!

4. Celebrate a different kind of love by spending the day with your family. Valentine's Day does not always have to be spent with a significant other. Show your family how much you love them.

5. Host a singles' party. Collect a group of your single friends and invite them over on Valentine's Day. Be sure to supply a lot of junk food and wine to keep everyone happy. You can do things like bake, gossip, watch movies or play board games. It is really up to you how you want to bond with your single buds, but remember, no couples allowed!

When thinking about what kind of food and drink you want to serve, try to stick to your anti-Valentine's Day theme. Serve some red drinks like Bloody Marys or some bitter-tasting, red-coloured cocktails. Foodwise, try messy foods that you would usually be afraid to consume on Valentine's Day like ribs, chicken wings, nachos, garlic bread or pasta. For dessert, try making some cookies in heart shapes. While the cookies are cooling, break them down the centre and decorate them with icing or leave them plain.
