London set to host 2006 Ontario Summer Paralympics Championship

During the first week in July, the city of London will have the pleasure of hosting the 2006 Ontario Paralympics Summer Championship.

Over 250 athletes are expected to travel to London from across the province to compete in the multi-sport games for athletes with physical disabilities.

“People with physical disabilities have [the same] goals and dreams as everyone else,” said Paralympics Program Manager, Elizabeth Walker-Young.

London will also play host to the 2006 National Paralympics Track and Field Championships in conjunction with the provincial event.

The competitors, who range in age from mid-20's to mid 30's, will compete in athletics, track & field, boccia, power lifting, goal ball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

Adaptive rowing will be added as a demonstration event and will be held on Fanshawe Lake.

The event is open to athletes in all disability groups, including amputee, blind, cerebral palsy and wheelchair.

“The Ontario Summer Paralympics Championship is funded by government funding from the Ministry of Health and Promotion, by donations and sponsors in London”, said Walker Young.

All sporting events will be held on the campus of the University of Western Ontario. Athletes will stay on-campus in Essex Hall, which can accommodate up to 500 athletes.

Athletes go well —prepared to the championship, with many training year-round for their events.

The registration fee is the only expense for the athletes.

Although the registration fee is the only expense for athletes, the organizers still need volunteers to contribute to the success of their event. Volunteers will be required to complete a minimum of eight hours over the course of the event. If you are interested in volunteering go to www.london.ca/2006OPSC.

A volunteer training session will be held on June 17.
