Fanshawe fashion on Richmond Row

Until the end of June, five Fanshawe fashion design students will have their one-of-a-kind designs on display at Ms. Emma Designs on Richmond Row.

Leigh-Ann Waller, coordinator of Fanshawe's fashion design program said all third-year students and recent graduates were given the opportunity to have their collections displayed at the 567 Richmond St. location, and although there was a high response among applicants, only five made the final cut.

Thanks to the support and guidance of their professors, Stephanie Girard, Ashley Barton, Alison Bruder, Susan Paige and Andrea Taylor's dream and hard work paid off.

These five students were able to meet the deadlines and schedules with their professors.

The students needed to meet budgets and find fabrics they could afford. The store will receive 30 per cent of each sale of what was sold, while the student will 70 per cent.

“The students will hopefully recuperate the costs of their investments,” Waller said about the 70 per cent profit margin.

Student designs include fleece hoodies, tailored jackets, and pants, printed skirts, tops and dresses and white cotton dresses.

While most one-of-a-kind pieces can set you back hundreds even thousands of dollars, the student creations are running from $24 to $85.

Waller said the students have sold six of the 40 pieces on display at the store.

Waller said staff is “thrilled” with these collections. The boutique specializes in clothing for older woman and is excited to include clothing aimed to young people at the store.

Unfortunately, Ms. Emma Designs' will be closing its doors at the end of June.

“We are looking for more retailers,” said Waller. “We are looking for a store where we can move the collection to.”
