Hipster style takes on different nuances depending on where you’re from.

There are many opinions of hipster living, but it's usually identified as open-minded thinking and counter-culture way of living.

Hipsters are highly expressive and art-loving, and their thirst for uniqueness makes their influence on the fashion industry undeniable — the two concepts really do go hand in hand. But as you may know, when fashion is popularized, “everyone” will eventually have it and adapt to the style and this will make the true hipster search for the next new thing to be unique. This makes them truly resourceful fashion visionaries.

Hipsters can wear the same items in a different way and change the entire feel of the outfit or add a new accessory from their latest thrift find to achieve this. They paved the way for layering distinct pieces together to look like it came right off the streets of New York City and wearing pieces of clothing from the opposite sex stylish and edgy. The same outfit can be changed up to be worn to go see the newest indie band on the scene from the U.K.

Whether the hipster trend is your style or not, you most likely have bought something influenced by this fashion movement within the past couple of years.

“Hipsterism” has many different facets and key elements, so for now here are a few tips on how to achieve a hipster look. Some key items to achieve a hipster look are a red and black oversized flannel (men's flannels work perfectly), ripped denim of some sort, oversized shirt with obnoxiously big writing on it (sometimes cut in very interesting places), chunky necklace, a chunky watch and footwear with an exaggerated design element (in this case, it's over the knee).

The first look you can achieve with all these items is the “New York City hipster” look, which has a touch of glam. Oversized shirts are tucked in slightly under highwaisted ripped jeans or shorts with an oversized men's flannel with the sleeves rolled up worn unbuttoned.

With all the same pieces but with an addition of a belt, you can achieve the “U.K. hipster” look. Button the flannel all the way up to the top, wear the necklace underneath the collar and belt the shirt at the waist while keeping the arms rolled up and voila, it looks like a lovely shirt dress. In three easy steps, these pieces have created two different hipster outfits.

1. Men's Flannel: Hipsterism has made it a social norm to integrate clothing from the opposite sex if it makes your outfit look more awesome. (Forever 21, $21.80)

2. Over-the-Knee Boots: Used to add an exaggerated touch to both looks, the same look can be done with over the knee socks and ankle boots. (Aldo, $130)

3. The rest of the outfit: This stuff can be found in pretty much any store these days (especially thrift stores), with all sorts of price ranges. The flannel and boots may be in “mass market” stores, but both have embraced the hipster style and made it possible for all of us to shop the trend conveniently, so have fun with it!
