Let the games begin!

There's something about the Olympics that brings people together. In a few weeks, people all over the world will gather together in support of their favourite sports, teams, and countries, and even individuals who normally have little or no interest in sports are transformed into the most avid of spectators and followers.

People are united by national pride, and Canada is no exception. The Canadian spirit will inspire many people to watch sports and be involved with their journey of the athletes right from the beginning.

The 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia will officially open on February 7 and will close on February 23. The winter games comprise of biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing. Within these sports there are also subdivisions, making it even more interesting and diverse.

One of the most anticipated displays, the opening ceremony, will be much anticipated. As per tradition, the Greek team will enter the stadium first and then begins the wait for the Canadian athletes. The march goes on until that Canadian flag appears; watching from home, you can only hope the feelings will cross the distance and show support to these athletes so far from home.

I was never a sports fanatic, but all the sports I prefer are summer sports, giving me even fewer reasons to tune in to the winter games. Yet there is an irresistible allure to the Olympic games in general, no matter the season; it's so easy to be captivated by the competition and finesse. The main winter favourite of the Olympic games has become the final series of games for both the women and men's ice hockey teams. There's a feeling of unity between Canadians across the country that's almost palpable. The arrival of the Games really brings an uplifting spirit to the air, something that can be so beneficial to our personal health and wellbeing.

Who are you cheering for? Whether you're a longtime fan of the sport or quite simply an Olympic enthusiast, embrace the Olympic spirit! The Olympic Games only come every two years, alternating between summer and winter, and each one is a unique experience. Get comfy and let the games begin!
