First Year at Fanshawe: Sarah Archambault is social-minded

Yet another week has swiftly gone by, giving me the opportunity to write about another of Fanshawe's awesome students. This week I had the chance to learn about Sarah Archambault, an ambitious and compassionate 19- year-old who has already graduated from Fanshawe's Police Foundations course! Okay, I know I said I was interviewing first year students, however, Sarah is an interesting case. She already has experience with Fanshawe, but this is her first semester in the Social Services Worker (fast track) program. So, I decided to cheat a little bit for this week's article and consider her a first year!

Sarah has a fast paced busy lifestyle; she balances school, work, and occasionally, when she has a bit of extra time, a social life — a reality many of us can sympathize with.

Sarah's decision to come to Fanshawe and pursue the Social Services Worker program seems to be largely due to her convictions and compassion. She first realized that this field interests her when she was enrolled in the Police Foundations program. “I had teachers who worked with victims services, and that always interested me. I want to help those who need it; victims, children, adults, animals.” This program also pragmatic advantages as well; like many of Fanshawe's co-op integrated programs, Sarah's program offers an opportunity for hands-on work. “I plan to get into victims services, helping abused partners and children. My placement ... will set me up to be able to get a job in these fields.”

Sarah appears to be very pleased with the opportunity that Fanshawe provides for equipping her with the necessary skills for her program. “Being a Fanshawe student opens up [doors] for placements, volunteering and potential jobs.” This, along with the clean, safe, and friendly atmosphere, is the reason that Sarah chose Fanshawe in the first place.

Sarah's dedication to her studies is admirable, and similar to other Fanshawe students, she also keeps busy with part-time work. Sarah works at Wendy's Restaurants 10 to 15 hours a week. “I have this job to help me through school.” Of course such a busy lifestyle is not always easy to maintain, Sarah admitted. “Since I'm in the fast track program, it is very easy to fall behind on reading and homework.” Employment and homework no doubt make it difficult for Sarah to find down time; luckily she does have some hobbies that she still enjoys, including scrapbooking, sewing and watching TV. “I don't really know what [else] I would do in my spare time because it's been so long since I've had spare time.” I really admire Sarah's ability to stay grounded and focused while juggling all life's demands and responsibilities. I also find her willingness to work so hard with the goal of helping vulnerable people encouraging.

On that note, I suppose it's about time for me to get back to my studies as well. Thanks Sarah, for allowing me and Interrobang readers to get a glimpse into life as a student in the Social Work program!
