Fanshawe FC: TFC's all-time worst trades

Maximiliano Urruti scored his first game for Portland after being traded from Toronto FC. Will he be the next in a long line of good players to leave the club?

Maxi Urruti found the net for the first time in Major League Soccer last month against the L.A. Galaxy. He just deflected a corner kick off the outside of his boot and into the net. Urruti is now a Portland Timber after being traded by Toronto FC earlier this season. TFC pursued the player as early as January, only to trade him for a fellow unproven striker, Bright Dike. Urruti could prove to be one of the biggest mistakes TFC have ever made. But for now, there are bigger ones. Let's have a look at some of the biggest.

Sam Cronin was drafted second overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by TFC, only to be traded in 2010 to San Jose for allocation money (funds that can be used to buy players outside the league). Back in 2010, the idea of destroying defensive midfielders was becoming more and more important, and that's exactly what Cronin was. He would sit deep and spend all day taking the ball. The fans really appreciated that and he was valued highly by supporters. Cronin has had over 100 appearances with San Jose, missing out on only a few games a year in three seasons. He is a very good player for this league and a cheap one at that. TFC has always been criticised for not having a core of players to build around. Cronin would have been a good, cheap, core player to keep around.

Marvell Wynne was picked up by TFC in their inaugural year back in 2007 from a trade with New York. He was traded to Colorado for Nick LaBrocca (who is now back in Colorado) and a useless third-round pick. Wynne is one of the most interesting players in MLS, because he is considered one of the fastest footballers alive, running the 100-metre dash in 10 seconds. Playing as a right defender, he could come up and support the attack very quickly and was very good in that regard. However, he was a defensive liability. In Colorado he became a centreback, and became a much better defender, completing his game. Wynne had the raw talent, but the coaches at BMO Field couldn't mold him.

On April Fool's Day 2011, Toronto FC traded away all-time goalscorer Dwayne De Rosario for two bit-part players and a first round draft pick. The Toronto native is one of the best players to ever play in MLS. The return of the great Toronto son was spoiled after he wanted more money from the ownership (he scored 27 goals in 57 games with the club). DeRo is still scoring goals for DC United at the tender age of 35, and he will continue to score goals for years to come. TFC lost a pure goalscorer, something they never had, and never have had since.

Now with TFC looking to part ways with goalkeeper (and all-time caps leader) Stefan Frei and fullback Richard Eckersley, more quality players could be leaving the club yet again.
