My Series of Unfortunate Events: It's a small world, after all

I often forget just how small a world we live in. The phrase “don't worry, you'll never see them again” is used far too often and is typically not true.

I recently de-cluttered my Facebook friends list a bit. From people I haven't seen since the eighth grade to fake celebrity profiles, I wanted to get a head start on my spring cleaning. Unfortunately for me, the next day at the grocery store I ran into about half of those friends I had believed to be gone for good. Coincidence? I think not. Turns out people are seriously offended when you press ‘unfollow' or ‘unfriend'.

This isn't the first time this has happened to me. When I was younger, I was very indecisive when it came to my hairdressers. If one refused to make me look exactly like Avril Lavigne, it was on to the next one. No word of a lie, I think I had seven different stylists within the span of a year. What kind of 14-year-old needs that kind of treatment? The downfall to changing things up so often was that I would always run into my ex-hairdressers after the initial breakup and I would have to give a brief explanation as to why I never called to book another appointment. I swear, running into an ex-hairdresser is more nerve-wracking than running into an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend.

Since then, I've learned that there simply is no way around this kind of situation. You will inevitably come face to face with that person who thought Taco Bell was a good spot for a first date.

I'm a big believer in six degrees of separation. Even when I lived abroad, I met someone who I ended up having a mutual friend with, 3,000 miles away.

So no matter how hard you try to get away or try to remove people from your life, they will always find a way back in — not necessarily permanently, but enough to make you wonder how they're doing in Farmville. My advice in that scenario is to smile and wave like nothing ever happened. Like they didn't give you the worst bowl cut of your life, and they didn't spam your Facebook feed with their Farmville activity. I'm telling you, there are other things to worry about.
