Academy Awards 2013: Ties, trips and third time wins

Remember when we watched Silkwood, Mulholland Drive, Titanic, Iris and The Reader? Remember how we saw Meryl Streep's boobs? And Naomi Watts' boobs? And Kate Winslet's boobs? Well, Seth MacFarlane sure does, and in his opening number for the 2013 Academy Awards ceremony, he made sure to remind us of that.

After a hilarious song and dance, a visit from Captain Kirk and some typical Seth MacFarlane-style crude humor — like a dig at Chris Brown and Rihanna — the awards presentations officially got underway.

It was a night filled with record-setting wins, a few surprises and more than a few endearing moments that made us fall even more in love with some of our favorite Hollywood stars. So... who took home top honours this year?

Cinematography
Life of Pi
I saw this one coming a mile away. The beautifully shot and visually stunning flick was sure to take home this award, and it was a well-deserved win.

Costume Design
Anna Karenina
Though I thought this one would go to Les Misérables instead, the costumers for the epic period piece Anna Karenina more than deserved the win.

Documentary Feature
Searching for Sugar
I have to say I was off the mark on this one, but sometimes the Academy will do unexpected things in the documentary categories.

Documentary Short
Inocente
A coming-of-age type doc about a young artist who's willing to do whatever it takes to make it? The Academy loves this kind of flick.

Film Editing
Argo
I made my prediction for this award based purely on how it had been cleaning up at other shows all season long, and my instincts proved right.

Foreign Language Film
Amour
Of course I'm not surprised that Amour won, or that the Canadian feature War Witch didn't, but it's always a little disappointing when the home-grown movies don't win the big prizes.

Makeup and Hairstyling
Les Misérables
I'm shocked that the Academy didn't give this one to The Hobbit for its extensive use of prosthetics and makeup for the dwarves.

Music - Original Score
Life of Pi
Another surprise for me, but then again, the musical categories are often known to be wildcards.

Music - Original Song
"Skyfall" by Adele
How could it have been anyone else? Well deserved.

Production Design
Lincoln
It was a period piece, but not the one I had thought would win.

Short Film - Animated
Paperman
A well-earned honour for Paperman.

Short Film - Live Action
Curfew
Hit the nail on the head with this sometimes fickle category.

Sound Editing
Skyfall/Zero Dark Thirty
I was half right in this category. In rare instances, when the vote is too close to call, the Academy will issue the award to the two films involved. Such was the case this year.

Sound Mixing
Les Misérables
Absolutely.

Visual Effects
The Hobbit: And Unexpected Journey
As an avid fan of the Tolkien-inspired movies, though my prediction was wrong, I am exceedingly happy with the outcome.

Writing - Original Screenplay
Django Unchained
A surprise for this category, but well deserved nonetheless.

Writing - Adapted Screenplay
Argo
My certainty proved founded for this one.

Directing
Life of Pi - Ang Lee
I really thought that David O. Russell would have taken this one home, but it can be argued that Ang Lee deserved it just as much.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Anne Hathaway - Les Misérables
How could she have missed? With her incredible singing and acting talents, both of which she showcased in Les Misérables, Hathaway has proven that she's now officially one of Hollywood's heavy hitters.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christoph Waltz - Django Unchained Though I'm a little sad my prediction was off, I'm thrilled that Waltz took home his second Oscar this year. A tip, Mr. Waltz: stick with Tarantino. He does good things for your career.

Actress in a Leading Role
Jennifer Lawrence - Silver Linings Playbook
If you didn't love Jennifer Lawrence before her name was called then you certainly fell in love with her when she tripped walking up to receive her award. And if you don't love Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman for jumping out of their seats and coming to her rescue, then there is something wrong with you.

Actor in a Leading Role
Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln
Of course he won. One of the greatest actors of his generation, and notoriously picky about the roles he takes on, Day-Lewis deserves each and every one of the accolades he gets. He has also now set the record for most wins in the Leading Actor category.

Feature Film
Argo
I couldn't be happier that Argo won. I really couldn't. Everything about this film was spectacular and though I think Ben Affleck's speech was maybe a little erratic, both he and his crew certainly deserve to back in their glory for a while.

So what was the one thing that we learned from this year's Oscars? It is the fact that when your speech goes long, they no longer play happy, cheerful music to usher you off. They play the theme from Jaws.

Oh, and in case you were counting that's 12 that I had right!

Until next year, folks!
