WWE Home Video releases CM Punk: Best in the World on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 9.

Current WWE champion CM Punk is referred to by many in the wrestling circle (including himself) as the best in the world. So it is appropriate that he is the subject of a new home video release from the WWE that just might be the best of its kind the company has ever produced.

CM Punk: Best in the World is a three-disc set that is highlighted by a nearly two-hour long documentary focusing on Punk's rise from backyard wrestler to one of the most recognizable stars in the pro wrestling industry.

The documentary goes all the way back to Punk's teenage years in Chicago, where he always was viewed as an outcast. It was then that Punk discovered the straight edge lifestyle (no alcohol, cigarettes or recreational drugs). It was also when Punk developed a love for professional wrestling. Along with some friends, Punk formed a backyard wrestling league that would attract hundreds of people to their shows.

From there, Punk decides to get some proper training, and moves onto the independent wrestling scene. In a rarity for a WWE release, we get footage from these shows, even from his days in Ring of Honor battling the likes of Samoa Joe.

Punk eventually gets signed by the WWE, but is sent to their developmental territory OVW. At this point, Punk does not have any faith that his career will go any further. With his tattooed body and smaller (by wrestling standards) frame, he didn't project the image that the WWE typically likes to promote.

Yet Punk eventually did make it to the big show and, despite many obstacles, has gone on to become one of the company's most bankable stars. But his tenure with the company hasn't been a bed of roses. Punk has sat back and watched big breaks given to others who he believes are less talented and who have put out much less effort than himself. I'm sure we've all gone through something similar to this, perhaps in your place of employment.

Punk and several of his closest allies vent on these issues throughout, but it never comes off as sour grapes. It simply comes off as a man who believes he has what it takes to make things better in his chosen profession and experiencing frustration over not being given the ball so he can run with it.

The match selection that fills up discs two and three is top notch. There aren't a lot of them, but that is because several of them are rather lengthy. Included are several you would expect — his Money in the Bank 2011 battle with John Cena, his WrestleMania bout from this year versus Chris Jericho and a TLC match from SummerSlam 2008 against Jeff Hardy.

There are also some less heralded contests that really round out this set nicely, including a 2008 Intercontinental title battle with William Regal and even a match from OVW against Brent Albright.

CM Punk: Best in the World is a must-have release for wrestling fans. The WWE puts out a lot of these DVD sets, but this one is a cut above. It belongs in a class with the finest they have ever produced, alongside The Rise and Fall of ECW and any of their Ric Flair retrospectives. Unlike CM Punk's finishing maneuver the GTS, this latest offering from the WWE will not put you to sleep.

CM Punk: Best in the World arrives in stores on October 9.
